Let’s Talk About Body Shame & Cock Shame in Men

Nick Perry and Juliet Allen On Body Shame in Men

Body shame and cock shame.

It’s common for a man living in our culture to grapple with such challenges in secret. Body shame and/or cock shame is still the sort of challenge that gets pushed into the shadows and left out of the conversation.

It’s something usually adopted in childhood, and due to the stigmas associated with it in adulthood, it sticks around, continuing to have a negative impact on self image, self esteem and self expression.

I’ve been lucky to have explored and worked on my own body shame/cock shame for a number of years now. What I’ve learned along the way (having sat in a lot of settings where this kind of challenge is brought out of the shadow), is that the simple act of talking about the ‘unspeakable’ is a highly cathartic and healing step to make.

In my opinion, it’s an important discussion for men to have in a safe and confidential space, facilitated by a person/people who are experienced and understand the sensitivity of the subject.

I’ve seen first hand the empowerment that is reclaimed when a man reconnects to his body and his cock with pride and appreciation.

So the two takeaways here: if you’re a man dealing with something like this, you’re not alone. And, this typically starts in childhood. Don’t take it to your grave. Find support.

And, let’s support our kids to celebrate themselves and respect their peers along the way!
